On Wednesday 27th at 5pm: In memory of Terence Henry Stamp (22 July 1938 – 17 August 2025) THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESSERT (1h30mins).
The film premiered at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, in the Un Certain Regard section. Upon its wide release, it became a surprise worldwide hit and its positive portrayal of LGBT individuals helped to introduce queer themes to a mainstream audience. It received predominantly positive reviews and won Best Costume Design at the 67th Academy Awards. The film is one of only three films set in contemporary times to win the award for Best Costume Design.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Priscilla has a 94% rating, the consensus states: “While its premise is ripe for comedy – and it certainly delivers its fair share of laughs – Priscilla is also a surprisingly tender and thoughtful road movie with some outstanding performances.”
American film critic Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times felt that Bernadette was the key part of the film, stating that “the real subject of the movie is not homosexuality, not drag queens, not showbiz, but simply the life of a middle-aged person trapped in a job that has become tiresome”.
Sydney, Australia. Bernadette, a grieving, world-weary transgender woman, is going through a rough patch in her life. However, when her drag queen friend Mitzi receives a last-minute invitation to perform in the backwater town of Alice Springs, she gives herself a break and embarks on a long road trip into the vast Australian outback along with flamboyant cross-dresser Felicia. As the outrageous trio hits the road in their bright-lavender 1976 Hino RC320 bus, the performers attract lots of attention, receive help from total strangers, and crush gender stereotypes. The question is, are these fabulous companions ready to experience the thrill of a real, live Les Girls show?
“All three leading ladies and their performances are outstanding. The story is very amusing, quite often hilarious but also grounded with the prejudices they encounter on their journey. If you need something to put a smile on your face, to put in perspective your own dilemmas, to distract you from the humdrum of daily life, then jump on Priscilla and let the girls keep you thoroughly entertained.” IMDb reviewer
