Description

The Cogmans Trail Run is a fast-growing mountain running event hosted in Montagu in
the Western Cape, first established in 2023 with the vision of showcasing the rugged
beauty of the Langeberg while stimulating meaningful off-season tourism for the region.
What began as a small, community-driven race has quickly evolved into one of the most talked-about winter trail events in the country, known for its authentic winter mountain
feel, high standard of organisation and strong local support.
From the outset, the event was built around more than just race day. The Cogmans was
created to celebrate the landscape, support local businesses and create a platform
where both elite and everyday trail runners could experience the raw, dramatic terrain
that defines Montagu and its surrounds. The race routes traverse a striking mix of
incredible singletrack, big mountain passes, rocky ridgelines and quiet valley trails,
offering participants a true sense of journey through the Langeberg.
In just a few years, the event has seen remarkable growth – expanding from its humble
beginnings to attracting over 600 people to Montagu – firmly establishing itself as a
must-do fixture on the South African trail running calendar. The continued addition of
new distances, including the flagship 100km ultra in 2026, reflects both the demand for
the event and The Cogmans long-term vision to build something truly special and
enduring, for years to come.
At its core, The Cogmans Trail Run remains deeply committed to responsible trail use,
environmental stewardship and collaborative relationships with landowners,
conservancies and the local community. The goal is simple but ambitious: to grow the
event in a sustainable, respectful way that continues to deliver memorable mountain
experiences while contributing positively to Montagu and the broader Langeberg region
year after year.

Route Description

The Cogmans route offering is designed to showcase the very best of the Langeberg –
from fast, runnable valley trails to rugged mountain passes and dramatic kloof traverses.
Five distances (10km, 17km, 34km, 50km and the flagship 100km) ensure there is a
challenge for every level of trail runner, each progressively stepping athletes deeper into
the wild terrain between Montagu and Robertson. The shorter routes (10km and 17km)
are accessible yet scenic introductions to the area’s incredible singletrack and iconic
views. The 34km and 50km step up the adventure with longer climbs, more technical
mountain running and a true test of endurance. At the top end, the 100km delivers a full
ultra experience – a point-to-point journey through remote, rugged landscapes that
showcases the region in its rawest form. Across all distances, runners can expect a
thoughtful mix of tough, beautiful and deeply rewarding.
