Ashton Winery

In the Valley of Wine and Roses

Introduction

Ashton Kelder was established on the 10th of May 1962 by a few eager producers. By the time the cellar was built the following year, there were 46 members who delivered a total of 2 130 tonnes of grapes. Today, more then fifty years later, we have a total of sixty shareholders who produce up to 24 000 tonnes of grapes annually.

We are ideally situated for commitment to quality as Ashton Kelder lies in the heart of the Robertson Wine Valley between the Breede River and the foothills of the Langeberg mountains. The unique climate, the variety of soils and scientific viticultural practices give the cellar the natural advantage to produce the best quality grapes and outstanding wines from this Valley of Wine and Roses.

When visiting be sure to play a game of chess on our giant chess board or book a tour of our 24 000 tonne capacity cellar. We have daily FREE WINE TASTINGS for over 18’s and a jungle gym for the grape juice brigade.

Or try our Bonica Vin Doux Rosé Sparkling – for those bubbly moments…
Bonica – pink as the origin of its name – the rose variety.

And of course our world-renowned Sparkling Red Grape Juice – non-alcoholic with no added sugar or colourants.

The Reserve Range

In this flagship range we proudly present the Roodewal, an ever changing red blend from a selection of the best wines we have maturing in new French oak.

The name Roodewal was formerly given to the red slopes of the Langeberg Mountains where it meets the Kogmans River between Montagu and the town now known as Ashton. The “Valley of Wine and Roses” soon became one of the most significant agricultural regions in South Africa. With the completion of the railway connecting Roodewal with Cape Town in 1887, the town was renamed Ashton, after Job Ashton, director of the Cape Central Railway Company.

We also boast a Limited Release, which will always be a single cultivar red or white wine with exceptional quality, which we just had to bottle. Only 1000 – 1500 litres of this remarkable wine will be available.
