In ‘The Landscape and Architecture of Montagu – Derek Japha and Vivienne Japha’ described La Rochelle as follows:

“La Rochelle the largest and most elaborate house in the whole of Montagu, was built by one of the Joubert family, who owned one of the most successful general dealer’s stores in the town. It was illustrated in the society pages of a contemporary magazine (The South African Home Journal for April 1911) and was almost a literal copy of Melrose House in the Transvaal, in which the peace of Vereniging was signed”.
