The Remains of the Day
The Remains of the Day (1993), directed by James Ivory and based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, is a profoundly melancholic drama that explores repression, duty, and tragic missed opportunities. Set primarily in the 1930s at the grand English estate Darlington Hall, the film centres on James Stevens (Anthony Hopkins), a meticulously professional and emotionally rigid head butler.
Stevens defines his entire existence by service, believing that true “greatness” lies in absolute dignity and suppression of personal feelings. This dedication blinds him to the subtle but deep affection shared with Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), the strong-willed housekeeper. As the years pass and political turmoil—including the appeasement movement—unfolds around the morally ambiguous Lord Darlington, Stevens’ emotional paralysis prevents him from recognising, articulating, or acting upon his love. The film contrasts the beauty of the estate with the internal devastation of Stevens’ life, culminating in a poignant reflection on a life sacrificed entirely to a flawed ideal of duty, leaving him only with the regret of what might have been.
“An engaging and powerful motion picture, every bit the equal of Merchant Ivory’s best work, and certainly the most emotionally-wrenching tale they have brought to the screen.” – James Berardinelli, Reelviews
