I Am Love (120 min)

Luca Guadagnino’s I Am Love is a ravishing masterpiece that treats cinema as a purely sensory experience. Set at the turn of the millennium in Milan, it follows Emma Recchi (Tilda Swinton), the Russian-born matriarch of a powerful textile dynasty. Locked within the luxury of her aristocratic life, Emma exists as a curated object until a chance encounter with a young chef, Antonio, ignites a dormant fire within her.
The film is a triumph of aesthetic storytelling. Rather than relying on heavy dialogue, Guadagnino uses the textures of high fashion, the cold grandeur of Italian modernism, and the visceral ecstasy of food to chart Emma’s awakening. One famous sequence—where Emma tastes a plate of prawns—is filmed with such intimacy that it becomes a transformative, almost spiritual event.
Swinton is luminous, delivering a performance of incredible physical precision. Supported by Yorick Le Saux’s golden-hued cinematography and a propulsive score by John Adams, the film builds from a controlled, chilly drama into a frantic, operatic crescendo. It is a lush, heartbreaking exploration of the war between tradition and the irrepressible force of human desire.
