THE Gallery

Collectible, contemporary artworks by national and international artists, as well as lesser known, emerging artists

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised by local support, both in terms of coming to look at the art as well as actual, commercial support in the form of sales,” the owners of Montagu’s new art gallery, THE Gallery, told Montagu Mail.
THE Gallery, at 29 Bath Street, opened its doors with a launch party on 19 October.

“I would never have thought this many guests would come to an opening,” said a guest.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in an art gallery,” responded another.
The gallery couldn’t contain the guests attending the launch and the party spilt onto the pavement and into the street.
“We want to have a gallery that Montagu can be proud of,” says Laura Liebenberg, co-owner of THE Gallery. “Montagu has many features that make it a good tourist destination. It is beautiful, with lovely historic buildings, it has excellent hotels and guest houses, restaurants, hiking and cycling trails, rock climbing, the famous hot springs, and on and on. Maybe we can contribute to eventually adding art destination to that list.”
“In that respect, we’ve had a lovely, supportive response from other, existing galleries, like Ibis and Hicks,” says Jurie Wessels, her partner in the business. “There’s a lot happening in Montagu. It feels like we’re part of a bigger momentum.”
The owners say that they were also encouraged by the support they got from well-known artists who are keen to have their work shown by a new gallery in Montagu. The artists currently on show include Andries Gouws, Ryno Swart, Clare Menck, Dianne McClean, Arend Louw, Johann Louw, Theo Paul Vorster, Jenny Reyneke and several other artists who are well known throughout South Africa. Hanna Naudé is the only local artist exhibiting in THE Gallery.
“In addition to exhibiting a variety of quality art by the artists we represent, we shall rotate solo exhibitions for our artists,” Wessels told Montagu Mail. “We are starting with Ryno Swart, in December.”
