Cogmans upgrade to kick off

25 July 2015

The upgrading of the TR31 (Main Road 31, between Ashton & Montagu) was scheduled to commence on the 24th July, but will likely now kick off somewhere around the middle of August.

A meeting between the Consulting Engineers of the project and the Langeberg Municipality will be convened within the next few weeks, where after the Municipality will act as the liaison between the project's construction team and the various community forums to disseminate information on an ongoing basis with regards the programme, traffic arrangements & co-ordination (overall progress) as far as they are able to.

All parties involved in this project have undertaken to work together as closely as possible in order to minimise the unavoidable disruptions that could be caused during the construction period.
While everyone is excited and working towards a hugely successful outcome of this project , members of the public are asked to exercise patience during this time.

The planning for the much-needed upgrade to the road - from Ashton to Montagu as well as the Cogmans Kloof Pass - started more than 5 years ago.
Many role players and interest groups were consulted over this period, including: Tourism, the Business Sector, Heritage, the Mountain Reserve, Nature Conservation, etc.

Not only improved features such as more attractive and safer 'outspan areas' - where tourists can stop off to stretch legs, have a picnic bite to eat and to take some photographs - will be added , but many safety upgrades will be introduced as well, eg. elevating the road in sections that are usually heavily affected when the river is in flood. This, together with the improvements planned for our bridges could mean no more need to close the pass during heavy rains. Other improvements include the softening of some of the sharp curves along the road and also the redesigning of the T-junction turn-off to Swellendam. A smoother traffic flow and improved visibility at these areas will be effected.

After years of unhappiness Long Street will also be receiving attention : the introduction of more greening, safety features: eg. pavements and narrowing of the road in places, traffic flow, etc are now receiving consideration

The Langeberg, especially Montagu, has seen a tremendous growth in Tourism over these past few years . With the added awareness of Route 62 - which is very much a buzz word by now - the journey has become very important .
The welcome additions and improvements to our scenic entrance can only boost our appeal even more !
