Montagu Events 2013

26 January 2013

"2012 certainly proved that MANY HANDS MAKE FESTIVALS WORK! With collaboration between local business, tourism, NPO’s, charities and volunteers, we are set to deliver some amazing events in our beautiful town", says Helen Gooderson

In April the MONTAGU ROCK RALLY on the 13th and the MONTAGU MOUNTAIN MANIA on 26th April. Both events draw the Adventure Sport and family markets and are well established.

The 2nd BREYTEN BREYTENBACH BOEKEFEES Literary Festival, from 5-7th July will include 13 speakers and presenters on various aspects of Klein Karoo literature, poetry, book launches and interviews. This year the festival will also include the celebration of FRANCOIS KRIGE centenary, the world famous artist who left his mark firmly entrenched in the town. Last year saw many visitors from around the Cape converge on Montagu to enjoy this “injection” of arts and culture!

The RAD FOUNDATION will host the 18th Youth Arts Festival (M.M.A.D.D – Montagu Music, Art, Dance, Drama) which will be held from the 7th – 17th August, with the dance, music and art from the 7th – 10th. This will again include the extremely popular choir performances in the magnificent NG KERK on the 9th and the prize giving and show at 19h00 on the 10th. The Drama and poetry will take place from 14th – 17th August and the prize giving (OSCARS) and show will be at 16h00 on the 17th August. Last year saw Montagu Springs and Avalon Springs as the “Festival Village” where several schools stayed during the festival, and we envisage a larger number will again enjoy this! 2012 saw 982 entries from 65 schools so we can be sure to see well over 1000 entries this year

Following on the success of the first MONTAGU MAKITI – Family Heritage Festival last year, we are thrilled to know that this has now become an annual event and will take place from the 20th – 22nd September. The inaugural festival allowed many local business owners to showcase their product, volunteers to participate and as a bonus the Makiti Mime Time Show and Makiti “can” sales raised over R15 000 for various charities, with Breede River Hospice being the main beneficiary.

The 25th Annual ROSE SHOW will take place from the 25th – 27th October, when Montagu is ALIVE with the most spectacular array of roses, and people visit from all over the country! This year we plan to make the Rose Festival a big one as the other 4 towns will be invited to participate also.

With all these events taking place in Montagu, it not only affords us a marketing opportunity to generate tourism and local business revenue but also provides an extremely valuable platform to showcase why we received the CapeInfo.com “Town of the Year” accolade.
