Gecko Trail

Wilderness hiking at its best. Traverse the Langeberg via the Nuy River Gorge to Nuy Vallei

The Gecko-Trail links Simonskloof Mountain Retreat on the northern side of the Langeberg via the Nuy River Gorge to Nuy Valley Guest House on the southern side -15km from Worcester and Langdam Guest farm in the Koo Valley on the Eastern end. The trail reaches its highest point of 890m on Day one and 1460m on day two.
As we believe in the wilderness concept of “Leave No Trace” which encourages minimal human interference, we kept the trail free of painted footprints and hiking trail signs, neither are there artificial constructions like ladders or chains, instead you'll be encouraged to find your path with open eyes and your “forgotten” sense of direction (follow the rock cairns) at places you'll have to cross the water or climb over boulders on all fours and stick to the rock like... a Gecko! You might even spot one of the Bibrons thick-toed geckos most common to this area.

Other wildlife include Rhebok, Dassies, Leopard, Klipspringer and Baboons to name a few. The vegetation in this generally dry climate varies from succulent Karoo and Renosterbosveld to Mountain fynbos with plains of Protea but also a section of Blackwattle triggering conservation issues. There are many fresh water points along the 16km long route, while the main section follows the lower part of the Nuy river which acts as an natural irrigation channel for the Nuy valley. Here you are also invited to enjoy the rock pools for a cooling swim. Bizarre rock formations are omnipresent wherever you look and some are sheltering rock paintings of unusual design.

The trail can be hiked from either side, taking between 6-8 hours depending on fitness and your resting time. Accommodation and safe parking is available at either end. The 2nd leg of 14.5km/5-7h has been added in 2009 connecting to Langdam Guest Farm in the Koo Valley.
