White Lion Lodge on the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

 

Situated along the Klein Kalkoenshoek River on the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

A Karoo Wilderness Retreat on the Route 62, offering a unique safari experience near Cape Town. The privately owned White Lion Lodge is situated in the Southern Part of the Sanbona Wilderness Reserve. It offers luxury accommodation, exceptional personal service and delicious cuisine combined with nature and game drives.

Accommodation


The White Lion Lodge offers four individual stilted, unique glass and thatch suites. Each has a spacious bedroom, dressing room, full bathroom and its own outdoor shower. Each suite is equipped with a fireplace, satellite television, underfloor heating, air-conditioning, mini bar fridge, tea and coffee making facilities.

Panoramic views over the riverbed can be enjoyed from your private wooden veranda. The bathroom offers twin hand basins, a spacious bath, separate rain dance shower, toilet and bidet. Natural body products will pamper your skin. The bedrooms offer twin/extra-long king size beds. They are decorated with hand painted fabrics and custom made furniture, which blend in with nature and the environment.

Dining


After a fantastic day of spotting wildlife, flavours, tastes, smells and textures of from our kitchen remind you that you are in Africa. Food and emotions are incredibly interlinked, and nowhere is that more evident than in our cooking at the Lodge. Our chef uses the freshest produce to create dishes that combine flavours of her childhood together with the latest cooking techniques of European influence. No dinner would be complete without the enjoyment of exceptional wines from the Region. Dinner can be enjoyed in our dining room or on the open Veranda with the Karoo stars brightening up the night.

Facilities


The privately owned White Lion Lodge is the perfect isolated safari hideaway and can accommodate up to eight guests in four individual rooms. Natural stone walkways meander through a Karoo garden and provide easy access between the main lodge and the suites. Experience the silence of the Klein Karoo while our discreet staff ensure impeccable and personalised service. The Main Lodge is the main meeting point for a pre-dinner drink in the lounge next to a crackling fire. Relax with a book from the library on one of the sun decks, wind down around the 15-meter infinity swimming pool, or laze on your private wooden deck and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Klein Karoo.

South- Africa cuisine is served either in the dining room or on the veranda under the glorious African sky. There is a complimentary Wi-Fi connection for our guests. There is no cell phone reception at the reserve. A private game vehicle with a qualified field guide takes you on two safaris per day. An afternoon nature drive through the Southern part of the reserve and an early morning game drive to the northern side of the reserve.

Route Description

From Somerset West to the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town via N2

Go over the Sir Lowry’s Pass, drive along the towns of Caledon and Riviersonderend until you get to the turn off Stormsvlei.
Turn left into Stormsvlei and carry on to Bonnievale.
When you get into Bonnievale turn right at the first stop sign, direction Montagu (500 meters after the T-junction).
You will drive in a half left circle around a church and then turn left, direction Montagu.
At the next T-junction turn left onto the R60 and at the following junction right onto the Route 62, direction Montagu.
Travel on through the Montagu Pass to Montagu.
Continue on the R62 for approximately 43 km and turn left at the “Die Vlakte” and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve signs.
Stay on the gravel road for further 7 km and arrive at the Main Gate, where our guests will be welcomed and a map will be given to them, how to find the Lodge.
From the gate it is a further 9 km drive to the White Lion Lodge.
Follow the sign Khani Lodge until you get to a sign Private Lodges. At this sign turn left and carry on until you get to Lodge 22, the White Lion Lodge.

From Oudtshoorn (R62) to the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Take the R62 from Oudtshoorn to Barrydale, via Calitzdorp, Zoar, Ladysmith, 176 km.
From Barrydale follow the road towards Montagu and 20 km after Barrydale at the “Die Vlakte” and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve sign turn right onto a gravel road.
Stay on the gravel road for further 7 km and arrive at the Main Gate, where our guests will be welcomed and a map will be given to them how to find the Lodge.
From the gate it is a further 9 km drive to the White Lion Lodge.
Follow the sign Khani Lodge until you get to a sign Private Lodges. At this sign turn left and carry on until you get to Lodge 22, the White Lion Lodge.

By Air

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve has a private landing strip near the Bellair Dam.
Air charters can be arranged with registered charter companies or private aircraft with overnight guests are welcome. Prior arrangements must be made with the Sanbona Wildlife Management.
